Celebrating 30 Years

We first approached Chloe back in 2018, after noticing her art on Instagram. Chloe instantly clicked with our brief, which led to our first collaboration for the launch of our very first Vegan Cookie. Several briefs and drafts later, 12 more illustrations came to life, each inspired by the Byron lifestyle and ethos.

Q: How did you become an illustrator and designer?
I started out working in the fashion industry but knew it wasn’t for me, my friends convinced me to enroll in a design fundamentals course, I never for a second thought I would end up studying illustration from it but it just felt like such a natural fit. It was exciting and the first time I had a real sense of thrill from what I was doing. I knew it was going to be hard work and something that I was really going to have to hustle for but I have no regrets, I really do love what I do.
Q: Where is your studio based?
I have a small but sunny studio in Newtown (Sydney) which I share with my partner and my pup and my 2 million plants.
Q: How would you describe your design style?
I think it’s very situational. I like to illustrate everyday moments and ordinary life. People just being people and doing their thing...I think there is something special about capturing quiet moments.
Q: What / who inspires you the most?
I get inspired all the time by everything! But I think my friends and my family play a big part, they are all funny, strong, inspirational people who are a constant source of ideas. Also nature, I’m obsessed with gardening and never feel better than when I have my hands in dirt or swimming or going on a bush hike with my dog.
Q: How would you describe the “Byron Vibe” that transpires from your illustrations for Byron Bay Cookies?
Again, I think it’s very situational...I wanted to capture the laid back organic lifestyle of Byron. I wanted the illustrations to have a relaxed but fun vibe because I feel like that’s what Byron is all about.
Q: With Byron Bay Cookies turning 30 years (young) this year, this makes us reflect on how far we’ve come as a brand. As an artist, how do you approach the concept of legacy? What do you want people to take from your art?
I just want people to feel good when they see my work. It’s the nicest feeling when someone goes out of their way to let me know that my illustrations made them laugh or that they saw themselves in it and it made them feel good or special. Just to make people smile or lighten their day would make me very happy.
Q: What tips would you give someone looking to follow in your footsteps?
It’s definitely harder than I though it would be so it does require a lot of patience, perseverance and self belief...I spent years working multiple jobs and having very little time off but it has been worth it. I love working for myself and collaborating with interesting and like minded people and brands and being able to bring ideas to life. My greatest piece of advice would be, if you want it bad enough then do it. Don’t listen to anyone that tries to tell you to give up on it.
Q: What is your dream project?
Well, this was pretty great! I’m so lucky that I’ve been able to work with so many amazing brands like Byron Bay Cookies but I would LOVE to illustrate a book at some point, that would be a dream come true!
Q: Out of the 13 designs you’ve created for Byron Bay Cookies, is there one that stands out more, and why?
I love the Triple Choc design, it is very much me on the weekend. A trip to the farmers market with my pup in tow to pick up some veg and let’s face it, probably another plant...Perfect day!
Q: And last but not least, what is your favourite cookie flavour?
Oof that’s a tough one, they’re all so delicious but i think Toasted Coconut and White Choc...it’s absolutely binge worthy!
